Reviews
This acclaimed theater attracts top talent and produces relevant, engaging and provocative plays and musicals in the classic canon, though reimagined and reinvigorated for the contemporary audience. Highly recommend.
Watched Romeo and Juliet here recently (if you haven't checked it out, you have until June 3rd). The spacing in this theatre is perfect for the act as it's very intimate. Definitely a plus points to the whole show, not to mention that this reimagined Shakespearean tragedy is a class on its own. AAPI meets Classic indeed!
Had a great experienxe at the CSC. Small intimate theater, feels like you are part of the play. The play was great, acting musical and all. Look forward to seeing another show there.
We've been members for about 4-5 years. Membership runs about $50/ticket for a 4 show season, which is downright cheap for first rate professional acting, production, and staging. Most of the productions are classics - Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov - but some newer material has been added in the last few years. Sondheim's Passion was one of the best shows we've seen on or off Broadway. Amazing.
Small space - about 200 seats - see photo #2. Each show arranges the seating plan differently, but it's usually 3 sets of seats surrounding the stage. When people say it's an intimate space, they're right - if you're sitting in the first row do not put out your legs in front of you - you just might trip the actors.
Everyman Coffee Shop in lobby - great expresso's and baked goods.
Update: Deducted one star for their ill-conceived decision to stop handing out printed Playbills for the last 4-5 shows. You can download a PDF of the "Playbill", but it's just not the same. They claim it's a"Go Green Initiative" which is another term for cutting costs.
One of my favorite theaters in NYC. Intimate but spacious. Always have interesting productions. Saw Black Odyssey on March 5, 2023. A new perspective on Homer's classic epic poem. First rate.
We saw "I Can Get It For You Wholesale." The show and the performances are great. It's dark, cynical and gives you much to think about.
Classic Stage Company produces classical theater productions with minimal props and top quality classical talent. Members and patrons travel from great distances to experience live off-Broadway musicals like Carmen Jones and other great classicals.
The theater staff and volunteers professionally astute, with high consideration for people with disabilities. It is highly recommended that people with different physical abilities should call to make arrangements in advance for special accommodations.
A cafe is located in the lobby, however, food and drinks are not permitted inside the theater. The box office is also located in the lobby just beyond the cafe.
The building is easily visible from outdoors. It is clean and well manicured inside.

@Classic Stage Company...was an interesting space, with weird energy front house staff. I got there and had forgotten to bring a mask. I waited outside the theater π awaiting the return of the gentleman that was sent to retrieve face π· for the guest. As he offers me a π·...I accept and said, "thank you." He clearly heard my acknowledgement, but rudely turned away. Shady example 1. As far as the actual production...overly ambitious π§ππ«π«π«. The plot was hijacked from a classic Chinese drama...a movie π₯ made awhile ago. The ensemble is an entire Asian cast... the acting @ best was exceedingly over-the-TOPπ―π§. The actors low level skill set (e.g. vocal production, enunciation etc...)was not π« just lackluster... but also, subpar...the effect was a junior at a community college theater π program...(emphasis on the 'junior' in a 2yr program ππ₯Έ). No effort made in set design, costume design was devoid of any creativity!!! This production was wayyyyyyyy too long. It was excruciating and torturous sitting through the 1st act. When intermission arrived I couldn't wait to escape for fresh E. Village air...the dude @ the door πͺ said return/resume time is @ 7:21 PM. I returned @ that exact time to π CLOSED πͺ. I knocked to no avail. Then just left & treated myself to McDonald's π―π―. The is EXPERIENCE is indictive to many black theater π goers...the only difference is that I write my experience and publicly publish my honest review. The production was SNOW in the MIDSUMMER. I suggest you take up a membership with your local @BLOCKBUSTER B4 patronizing this establishment or low level poorly produced staging & watch the ORIGINAL movie πΏπ₯π―π
